Call for Abstracts - 3rd IFLA AFRICA SYMPOSIUM in Abuja, Nigeria

3rd  IFLA AFRICA SYMPOSIUM
Abuja, Nigeria
Monday 14th to Friday 18th, October 2013

PEOPLE AND LANDSCAPES

African Landscape Convention
INTRODUCTION

United Nations Economic and Social Council Economic Commission for Africa/ African Union Commission [UNESCECA/AUC] (2011) joint submission reiterated the fact that “sustainability will remain elusive if we do not design ways to live within the means of one planet and if there is no hope for all for a better life on that one planet”. It is a call for ecological sensibility that biocentrically sees humanity as part of a wider community of life and as basis for true sustainability that heals degraded landscape.

Green economy is a response to the multiple crises confronting humanity in recent decades especially resource depletion, economic crises, climate change anomalies and food insecurity. The later is particularly true of Sub Saharan Africa with twenty one of the thirty poorest nations of the World and highest number of people that are unable to feed adequately. The twin issues of poverty and glaring food shortage is traceable to land degradation that threatens environmental performance of both rural and urban landscapes. Indiscriminate logging, overgrazing, reliance on fire wood, peasant farming, bush burning, uncoordinated mining, oil spillage and sprawling urbanization continue to strip the landscape of its vegetative cover.

This is in view of unpredictable and extreme weather events that propel massive flooding, gully erosion, destructive ocean surges and desertification. There is an urgent need to examine our value system and identify more productive landscape developmental alternatives. Green economy as a local developmental strategy must then address land and water management in all their ramifications. This symposium recognises cultural differences in landscape perception and aims at generating people oriented strategies, policies and agenda for social, environmental and economic sustainability through discussions of all stakeholders and environmental professionals at continental level. You are invited.

Call for abstracts

Landscape architects, architects, environmental designers, planners and individuals in extant disciplines interested in productive local developmental strategies are invited to submit research and / or practice oriented abstracts which address the 2nd International IFLA-Africa Symposium theme or sub themes.

Local Organising Committee will group relevant abstracts for presentation into detail symposium themes and sub themes. These categories will form focused sessions directed by specialists to create conducive environment that will generate solution oriented ideas, policies and implementation strategies.

Abstract Submission Deadline: February 28, 2013

EAAE-ARCC 2014 Conference: University of Hawaii at Manoa, School of Architecture

Beyond Architecture: Making New Connections and Intersections
EAAE-ARCC 2014 International Architectural Research Conference

Dates: February 12-15, 2014
Location: University of Hawaii at Manoa, School of Architecture

Our increased awareness of the multiplicity of deep and broad connections between mental, physical and metaphysical constructs leads us to rethink the autonomy and insularity of disciplinary structures.

Considering that the formation, naming, development, and institutionalization of disciplines have, and have had, pragmatic, political and instrumental purposes, it now appears that such applications are also limiting in a world demanding more interconnectivities and transactions.

We need to investigate: Why is a new transformed structure of thinking and practice emerging now? What forms should a restructured knowledge and praxis take in the re-disciplining of architecture? What benefits might arise from such new constellations of thought and action? What might we lose, or forget? What is the impact for the future profession and body of architecture?

CONFERENCE SUBTOPICS:

1. Re-Disciplining: The Rise, Fall, and Reformation of the Disciplines.
History, Theory, Historiography, and Futures Studies

2. Structures of Intersections: Reorientations of Identities and Alliances.
Global, Local, Geographic, Ethnic, and Disciplinary

3. Methods: Agents of Change in Changing Paradigms.
Scientific, Technological, Strategic, Intuitive, and Pragmatic

4. Ends: The Distopia in Utopia and the Final Cause.
Forces, Causality, Ideology, Values, Myth

5. Scramble:
Knowing, Structuring, Configuring, Processing, Assembling, Consuming

ARCC 2013 Architectural Research Conference at UNCC

ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH CENTERS CONSORTIUM
2013 ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE
MARCH 27-31, 2013

> CALL FOR PAPERS
ABSTRACTS DUE: OCTOBER 8, 2012
FULL PAPERS DUE: JANUARY 21, 2013

Historically, society has recognized architects for their role in the creation of buildings and less so for their role in the production of knowledge. Research advances the discipline of architecture by introducing new ideas, defining methodology, testing questions, developing technology, and promoting critical discourse. Yet exactly how research shapes design and the built environment is not always clear. For many, its contributions remain all but invisible.

The theme of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC) 2013 Architectural Research Conference is visibility, in all its possible connotations. The goal of this year’s conference is to interrogate the idea of visibility from a variety of perspectives in order to bring research itself into sharper focus. The conference committee welcomes researchers, educators, and practitioners in architecture and affiliated design professions to participate and invites paper submissions on new and continuing research.

Session Topics include:

  • POLICY - educating policymakers, practitioners, and the public
  • CULTURE - making visible: new ideas, minor voices, and topics on the margins
  • SUSTAINABILTY - visualizing sustainability and performance in buildings
  • HISTORY - maps, media, and models in architectural history
  • URBANISM - technology, connectedness, and the urban environment
  • CONSTRUCTION - innovations in materials and construction visualization
  • PEDAGOGY - new visions and revisions in architectural education
  • OPEN SESSION

The paper review process of this conference will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will involve a blind peer review of abstracts. Successful review at the abstract stage will result in an invitation to submit a full paper for a second-stage blind peer review. All abstracts and papers will be submitted through an online interface and must adhere to conference guidelines. Authors are limited to one submission per session topic.
